Why Venice
was Crushed from the Sixteenth Century
Venice in 1400 looked as if it would become the centre of the world.
It was rich, creative, the centre of a great seaborne Empire. Yet
it was unable to move beyond because of a number of political and
other pressures, including the jealousy of the great powers of Europe,
the costs of war on mainland Italy and the recurrence of bubonic plague.
