Rice growing
effects society and economy in many ways
The stages of rice cultivation are described. The fact that rice is
labour intensive, is best grown on small holdings and requires no
grinding has had profound effects on the civilizations dependent on
this crop. It has led to dense populations, the diminution of animals,
the absence of an incentive to mechanize production and hence to 'industrious'
solutions to the problem of earning a living.
