The competition
of European States leads to rapid change
Although gunpowder was invented in China and only later came to Europe,
it soon revolutionized western societies, altering western technical
and scientific knowledge as much as western politics and warfare.
Filmed in Cornwall, we see the rapid development of canon from the
late medieval period through to the nineteenth century. By the eighteeenth
century this was giving Europe a power advantage over all other parts
of the world. It also made the boring of the piston and other parts
of a steam engine possible.
