The competition of European States leads to rapid change

Although gunpowder was invented in China and only later came to Europe, it soon revolutionized western societies, altering western technical and scientific knowledge as much as western politics and warfare. Filmed in Cornwall, we see the rapid development of canon from the late medieval period through to the nineteenth century. By the eighteeenth century this was giving Europe a power advantage over all other parts of the world. It also made the boring of the piston and other parts of a steam engine possible.
